Abram, from Ur of the Chaldaeans made a covenant with God, being given the name Abraham. He was rewarded with a great multitude of descendents and a land for them. God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham agreed despite his great love for his son. God spared Isaac, but only after seeing the Abraham was willing to do anything God asked of him. This icon was commissioned for the diakonikon of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in South Glens Falls, NY

When the Holy Prophet Moses was born in Egypt, Pharaoh ordered the death of all the male children. To save him, his mother sent him down the Nile River in a basket where he was found and raised by the Pharaoh’s daughter. At 80 years old, he fled to Midian and spoke to God in the Burning Bush. God had chosen him to lead his people out of Egypt and to bring them to the Promised Land. To help him, God appointed Aaron to speak for him. Moses led the people through the Red Sea and brought them to the edge of the Holy Land, but was not allowed to enter himself. Aaron was made the first High Priest of the Israelites. The Prophet Moses is credited with writing the first five books of the Old Testament. He appeared with the Prophet Elijah at the Transfiguration of Christ.

Prophets Moses and Aaron,
O Lord, through them we beseech Thee
to save our souls.
